Burgos via Atapuerca

We arrived in Atapuerca by 11am and decided to call it a day after 12 miles.  ee could have continued, but we would arrive in Burgos the following day regardless.

After checking into the albergue,  we learned that the only market in town was closed for the day.  No cooking today.  ee wandered around the small town that had four restaurants,  and settled on a modern looking one.  What a treat!

Instead of the usual food,  we were treated to a gourmet meal of pasta with fresh vegetables and curry chicken.  It was nice to taste some different flavors after two weeks of Spanish food.  The restaurant was buzzing with business as tourists flock to this small town to visit the site of the oldest human remains found in Europe.

We were treated to our own private room at the albergue by a nice hospitalero who didn't assign the remaining two beds to pilgrims that arrived later in the day.  It's the little things that make the difference.   Off to Burgos in the morning.

Burgos was a short walk of 12 miles, but in the cold!  We had to take out our rain jacket to stay warm.  We walkef along a river bypassing the sprawling city and crossed a bridge to get into thr cathedral area.

The albergue in Burgos is modern with small cubicles of four beds.  We checked in and hit the town to resupply and for the girls to do some shopping.   It is a real shock to the system to go from small towns of a few hundred to 200 thousand.

Burgos is a beautiful city with lots of shops and frozen yogurt.   I treated myself to an American hamburger.   It was nice to have modern conveniences for a change.  Many pilgrims spend two days in Burgos,  but we wanted to keep going.   Although the earlier rest day was nice, it was tough to get going the next day.

We enjoyed enjoyed the city, but it was nice to get back on dirt trails the next day.
